Joyce Weems

Joyce Dwain (Thomas) Weems, 86, of Winters passed away Monday, May 20, 2024. She was born August 25, 1937 in Bokoshe, Oklahoma to parents Jewel and Audrey Thomas. She was a member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. She married Johnny Marlon Weems on July, 1, 1957 in Carlsbad, New Mexico and they moved and settled down in Winters. She successfully tackled a variety of tasks in her 86 years. She loved to sew, crochet, try new crafts, enjoyed cooking, listening to country music in the car, and volunteering from time to time. She was a wife, mother, grandma, and great grandma. She was an avid person her in grandchildren lives. Joyce worked a variety of jobs. She went wherever her heart lead her, from waitressing at her uncle and aunt Thomas restaurant, to working as a clerk at Smiths Drugs, to later attending and graduating from EMT school in Abilene as a paramedic. She rode the local Winters Ambulance for several years, which gave her great satisfaction for helping people. She drove the school bus for Winters ISD for a few years. She worked alongside her beloved husband Johnny at their local Shell Service Station until his retirement and passing. She was engaged and served proudly as the Runnels County Justice of the Peace for over a decade, which she considered a vast resource in knowledge. She will be remembered best as a hard worker, adventurous, talented and comical at times, with a great sense of humor and a spirited nature. She was a member of the First Baptist Church for many years. She is preceded in death by her husband Johnny Weems of Winters Tx, daughter Marla Weems of Ennis TX, sister Linda and husband Ted Groeble of Midland Tx, brother Jay Thomas of Odessa Tx, brother in law Freehand Fields of Odessa Tx, and cousin Betty Fields of Abilene Tx. She survived by sister Ruth Fields of Odessa Tx, sister-in-law Sherry Thomas of Odessa Tx, dear friend Betty Grenwelge of Winters Tx, son Marlon Weems (Buddy) and wife Trish Weems of Burleson Tx, daughter Shanna Weems of Winters Tx, grandchildren: Chase Weems and wife Rachel of Durant Ok, John Weems of Burleson Tx, Kelsea Garcia and husband John of San Angelo Tx, Kolton Garcia of San Angelo Tx and girlfriend Shantel of Ottawa Ks, Kaitlyn Fuentes of Winters Tx, Jonna Young of Stephenville Tx, Mathew Finnel and wife Tracee of West Virginia, Skylar Fintel of Belton Tx, Shay Wade of Abilene Tx, and Andy Daniels of Ennis, Tx; and great grandchildren: Oliver Marlon Weems of Durant Ok, John Maverick Esquivel of San Angelo Tx, and babies Garcia and Weems coming later this year. She has numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins in and around Texas and Oklahoma. The family will be receiving visitors and friends on Sunday, May, 26, 2024 at 6:00pm at Winters Funeral Home. Services will be held Monday, May 27, 2024 at 2:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Winters Tx with burial following at Lakeview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church in Winters or your favorite charity.
