Marlene Smith

Marlene Smith, 87, of Winters, TX passed away Tuesday, April 22, 2025. She was born January 26, 1938 in Winters to James and Myrtle Smith. She grew up in Winters and graduated from Winters High School in 1956. She then attended and graduated from business school in Abilene in 1957. She married David Alan O'Connor and moved to Florence, AL where she worked for the local electric company. Her and David had four sons, Tracy, Stuart, Brian, and Doug. In 1969, she moved to Abilene, TX and started her career with Hardin Simmons University. She also worked for Blue Cross Blue Shield. She married Elton Ray "Tuffy" Smith in 1976 and moved to Brazoria, TX. Shortly after, she began an almost 20 year career working for Dow Chemical. She was an accomplished typist and took pride in her secretarial work. Marlene took an early retirement package in 1995 and moved back to Winters, TX. Upon moving back, she worked with her brother, Dr. Jimmy Smith, DVM and also for Dr Tommy Russell, DMD. Marlene enjoyed traveling, playing cards, dominos, and socializing with her many friends. She also volunteered at the Rock Hotel and was the secretary of Sunday School Attendance at First Baptist Church where she was a member for many years. Marlene was preceded in death by her parents James and Myrtle Smith, husband Elton Ray "Tuffy" Smith, sisters Patsy Shomette and Darlene Smith, and brother Jimmy Smith, DVM. She is survived by four sons: Tracy O'Connor and wife Diana of Lorena, TX, Stuart O'Connor and Margaret of Holly Lake Ranch, TX, Brian O'Connor of Winters, TX, and Doug O'Connor and wife Vicky of Arnaudville/Lafayette, LA; brother Doug Smith; sister Judy Daugherty; as well as 12 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at 5:30 p.m. Friday, April 25, 2025 at Winters Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 26, 2025 at Lakeview Cemetery in Winters, TX. The family would like to extend their appreciation to Brian O'Connor for the love and care he's provided Marlene, as well as gratitude to Sandy Oswalt, the Hendrick Hospital staff and Genteva Hospice.
